Cloudy Day Beauty At Reid State Park

February 27, 2012
Cloudy sky over the ocean at Reid State Park

Clouds diffuse the glare of the sun

Everyone loves a sunny day at the beach. For a photographer, however, that can be an exposure nightmare. So as I watched the clouds roll in at Reid State Park in Bath, Maine, I felt a smile cross my lips. If all went right, the clouds and sun would combine for just the right effect over the ocean.

Mother Nature briefly smiled back at me. Thankfully I was ready. Using my knee as a tripod while battling the wind, I waited for just the right moment. I needed the clouds to diffuse the sun, yet still allow enough rays through to cast light across the water. Then, the challenge was to time the shot with the curl of incoming waves.

When all of nature’s photographic influences align, magic occurs. That is what I felt I captured in this shot. Reid State Park is the perfect place to showcase cloudy day beauty.
