Thacher Island — A Great View From Loblolly Cove!

Thacher Island at dawn from Loblolly Cove

Thacher Island is located just off the coast of Rockport, Massachusetts. It’s one of my favorite nautical landmarks to capture with my lens. Where else do you get the opportunity to photograph twin lighthouses standing proudly on the same piece of land?

On this particular morning, I decided to shoot the island from a new location. I had recently discovered (through a bit of research and a lot of footwork) that Loblolly Cove would be an ideal place from which to shoot. Living nearby certainly added to its appeal. It would allow me to go shoot on the fly at any time.

Initially this was to be a sunrise shoot. Mother Nature, however, decided she preferred heavy cloud cover. I silently requested a compromise. She finally obliged — just at the break of dawn.

A pink sky backdrop gradually appeared, followed by rays of sunlight filtering through the clouds onto the wet rocks. I quickly chose a slow shutter speed to create a surreal effect with the ocean. Then, from over the horizon, appeared the distant light of a lobster boat. I call that perfect timing!
