Sunset Solitude At Annisquam Lighthouse

April 9, 2012
A solitary man next to Annisquam Lighthouse at sunset.

Lost in his thoughts…

Annisquam Lighthouse in Gloucester, Massachusetts, is one of my favorite spots on Cape Ann to shoot. I’ve found this to be a prime location for some gorgeous sunsets and dramatic skies featuring ominous clouds. Sometimes, however, the colors of sunset become muted due to an overcast sky and produce a soft, introspective mood. Such is what I found on this day.

The solitary man in this photo is what made the shot special for me. I watched him climb along the rocks for a while. He then suddenly paused for a moment, taking on a contemplative pose. I knew that was the moment to capture. His stance was in perfect parallel position to the lighthouse. As shown here, size is indeed relative. Case in point.

It’s moments like this — when all elements converge simultaneously to create something special — that make me love photography.

This photo was actually one of two captured that day as the result of an unexpected intrusion. Click here for the rest of the story.
