The Wayside Inn Grist Mill

The Wayside Inn Grist Mill in Sudbury, Massachusetts

One of my favorite places to visit — especially during fall foliage season — is The Wayside Inn Grist Mill in Sudbury, Massachusetts. As a photographer, I love both the texture and color this wonderful place offers.

Texture Abounds

The Wayside Inn Grist Mill features some exquisite stonework. This is where the texture I love begins — yet there’s much more. As you can see by the nature of its design, the stonework is fixed in place. However, the cascading waterfall is yours to control visually.

I wanted to maintain a bit of texture in my shot, rather than freeze the water’s action or create an ethereal, silky appearance. My ultimate goal was to show the movement and power of the water, yet still reveal a hint of the stonework behind it. Therefore I deliberately chose a moderate shutter speed for this shot.

A post and rail wooden fence — most likely milled by hand a long time ago — neatly frames The Grist Mill while also providing some additional texture. Depending on the time of day, the railing can cast some interesting shadows.

Color Accents

The eye-catching red of the water wheel and roof trim are perfect accents to the stonework. During the autumn season, The Grist Mill enjoys some splendid New England fall foliage as a backdrop. As you can see here, the shade cast by the tree line does its job helping to maintain the lush green grass.

More To See!

Just a short distance down the road from the historic Longfellow’s Wayside Inn, The Grist Mill is just one of several worthwhile places nearby to see — and photograph!

Liz, My parents were married in the coffee shop of the Wayside Inn in Sudbury. Nice to read about the mill which I assume was close by.

That’s great Miriam. I’m sure they are familiar with the mill then. It’s all a lovely area to visit and photograph — and get married!
