New England Stone Walls

A doorway to history…

If Stone Walls Could Talk…

If stone walls could talk, what story would this one tell? That was the thought that entered my mind when I spotted this fascinating stone wall and doorway on my way to the Gloucester Schooner Festival in Gloucester, Massachusetts, this past Labor Day weekend.

History in the Details…

So many things about this wall caught my attention. Obviously its wonderful stonework and the fascinating door were the first things to catch my eye. However, it was all of the little details that made this such a perfect subject for a HDR image.

The wall itself was in the shadows with some sunlight being filtered through the trees. Where the sunlight hit the wall and door added visual dimension. The splashes of color from the growing ivy accentuated the surrounding features. The horizontal, rusted mailbox with a scalloped edge mounted beneath the vertical slats in the door was the perfect contrast of shape and color, as well as past and present.

Add to that the gold lichen growing on the stones and the brush growing along the wall and in front of the door, and there it was — a perfect subject to shoot. There is no way that I could pass by something so magical and not capture it.

Those Burning Questions…

I’m sure I’m not the only person wondering this but… What do you suppose is on the other side of that Service door? Considering this is part of a private estate, we may never know. However, let’s just say my imagination has been run running wild. As for what that little padlocked door was used for, well, I have a theory or two. How about you? Any ideas?

I do think a return visit may be in order…
