New Hampshire’s Chocorua Lake

Autumn Reflection

A Fall Foliage Must See!

Chocorua Lake in Tamworth, New Hampshire, is conveniently located on Rt. 16. Everything about this lake makes for an iconic New England fall foliage scene.

I took this shot a couple of years ago in mid October at 9:35 a.m. The sun was high enough to pop the color and help cast a fantastic reflection. The patterned clouds were just enough to add both dimension and drama above and below the tree line. Who wouldn’t stop for such a fantastic sight?

Reflections – Great Optical Illusions!

One thing I really like about reflections are the optical illusions they can create. In this shot for example, the tall trees on the far right give the illusion that the image is not perfectly horizontal, but rather tips to the right. I assure you that is an illusion. The image is aligned correctly. The small trees on the far left, which are very far in the distance, further help to create the illusion. Mount Chocorua in the background also helps to trick the eye, as the mountain’s reflection in the lake appears to be moving towards you.

Best Time to Shoot Foliage

I’ve found that foliage is best to shoot early in the morning when the air is clean and clear, and the morning dew stills clings to the leaves. I also like to shoot foliage right after it rains. Color is often the most vibrant at these times of day. A polarizer filter can also come in handy if the sun is high and glare becomes a problem. Finally, slightly underexposing your images can also help to pop the color.

Start Your Engines!

So now that autumn is officially here, if you’re traveling through New Hampshire, take a drive up Rt. 16 and definitely check out Chocorua Lake. It’s a great way to start the day and kick off New England’s fall foliage season!

Thanks Judith. I’ll be heading north for my annual foliage shoot in the next couple of weeks. Color is changing far north and heading south my way! Liz
